Native Bird Rescue Waiheke Island
Native Bird Rescue is a small, native bird rehabilitation centre on Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. They care for ill and injured native birds and aim to rescue, rehabilitate and release them back to their natural environment.
As a registered charitable trust and volunteer group they rely on donations for medical supplies and equipment, specialised food for the birds and facility development to extend their hospital unit and be able to accomodate the increased number of birds received into care each year.
Since the voluntary service started two years ago, Karen Saunders (the founder) had been struggling to look after sick and injured birds while working full-time.
Along with other generous donations from charities, organisations and locals, a Gift Trust donation from an anonymous donor of $5,000 has supported Karen to become full time with Native Bird Rescue. The donation has also paid for a specially designed and constructed soft release enclosure for little blue penguins.
