Like most things, giving well isn’t a skill we’re born with. It involves our hearts and our minds, our passions and our influences, our day jobs and our families and it means we all have a very different set of priorities for our giving. And thank goodness we do, or we’d all be supporting the same causes and all the others would be broke!
Our donor webinar series this year is focused on helping our donors upskill, both in giving as a general rule and giving specifically into the fields they support most regularly. Gift Account holders can join us for these complimentary webinars to take a step back and consider how we give as well as why we give and who we give to. There’s a lot to learn and a lot to consider in becoming the donor we all want to be.
Things to look for when choosing a charity
Growing numbers of our donors are utilising our philanthropic research services to find out ‘who is out there’ in the community as well as; what they do; who they serve; who’s making their decisions; and how their finances look.
Though there are other things to consider too. Is bigger better? How do we find the balance between ‘new and unproven’ and so old my grandparents used their services when they were young? And does that matter?
There’s a question often addressed in the philanthropic sector that asks, should a charity’s staff and board look like the people they serve? Should they have lived experience in the field in which they work? Or is academic knowledge more useful?
One of the pieces of information we provide our donors is who else funds a charity, whether they have million dollar government contracts or whether they have dribs and drabs of funding from philanthropic trusts. Some philanthropic funders have such a reputation for excellence in their selection process that seeing their names associated with an organisation is close to an endorsement. Who are they? And what do they fund?
How about international giving? We’ve all heard stories of people being scammed. How likely is that? How can we find the charities doing the great work, who really need the funding, but who have a strong infrastructure and a good local reputation?
There are so many questions! Let us help you answer these questions and more in this year’s webinars.
Handy hints for giving
We’ll also feature webinars offering handy hints for funding climate, youth and kaupapa Māori work, how your giving can make the greatest difference for groups of all shapes and sizes.
