The Gift Trust is running a Gift Account for a Malawian project, Masks For All Malawi, that is providing locally made face masks to protect Malawi’s population against the spread of COVID-19.
The project is working with over 15,000 local Malawian producers, to make and distribute millions of masks in Malawi free of charge. Malawians are at greater risk of COVID-19 because over 40% of the population have abnormal lung function and many are immuno-deficient and malnourished. Malawi’s healthcare resource is also extremely low and there are only 17 ventilators in the country.
The Gift Trust is helping Masks for All Malawi by receiving and looking after the donations to the project and paying them out to Masks for All Malawi when they need them. This is called being a ‘fiscal sponsor’. There are several New Zealand connections to the project including some Gift Trust donors who are supporting it and some Masks for All Malawi volunteers who are based in NZ.
