Gift Trust news Our team

Cheryl Spain has recently joined our team.  Originally from New Zealand, Cheryl has worked predominantly in the UK for the past 20 years, specialising in the not-for-profit and social enterprise sector.

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of The Gift Trust’ s new Manager, Cheryl Spain, who has recently joined our team.

Originally from New Zealand, Cheryl has worked predominantly in the UK for the past 20 years, specialising in the not-for-profit and social enterprise sector.

She has held roles across senior management, marketing, project management and development.  Cheryl has a solid understanding of the charitable sector and experience working with donors to help them reach their giving goals.

The Gift Trust’s Chair, Glen Saunders says, “We are delighted to be appointing Cheryl as our new Manager. The Gift Trust is focused on growth in the coming years to encourage more generosity in New Zealand. The addition of Cheryl strengthens our team. The other trustees and I are looking forward to working with her as we start 2017.”

Our previous manager, Julia Capon, will remain with The Gift Trust, but has elected to step into a new role within communications. She will utilise her experience in this area to develop some key resources to guide our donors on their giving journey, while supporting Cheryl in The Gift Trust’s growth.

Cheryl’s most recent job was as the Development Manager within the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education at the Victoria University of Wellington. In this role, she worked with organisations and people who wanted to support the faculty’s research and creative work, helping them to make a difference to the key issues the University was working on.

During her time in the UK, she worked for nine years at the charity, Groundwork Hertfordshire – an environmental regeneration organisation. She was responsible for developing new projects and partnerships to benefit the local community and the environment including a home energy audit service, environmental education programmes, employment training schemes and community improvements.

She also held other roles at UK charities including South Bank Centre – a leading London arts centre, Friends of the Earth UK and ActionAid.

Cheryl has a Bachelor of Commerce from Victoria University of Wellington and now lives in Island Bay, Wellington with her husband and two children.

“We would like to recognise and offer thanks for the support we receive though The Gift Trust’s donation. An annual donation from one of your donors is one of the largest donations that Kaibosh receives each year and has been absolutely pivotal to our ability to operate with confidence and to expand our operation across the Hutt Valley. We are extremely thankful.”

— Matt Dagger, Kaibosh, Gift Trust grant recipient

“My gift account has made my giving easy. It lets me get straight to the fun and satisfying part of giving to the causes I care about, without the hassle.”

Setting up a Gift Account allows The Gift Trust to look after those requirements, and provide support that allows the donor to focus on what they really want to do with their gifts."

– Sue Barker, Sue Barker Charities Law

"The Gift Trust takes the guesswork out of giving. Having support with research and due diligence on donations ensures that funds are truly making the desired impact. It has been a real pleasure to work with The Gift Trust."
